IMMIGRATIONOPOLY (A New Twist on an Old Classic)
Erin Moroney
Immigrationopoly is a twist on the classic Milton Bradley game Monopoly. The object and rules of Immigrationopoly are the same as Monopoly. The object of the game is to become the wealthiest player through buying, renting, and selling property. You will also be given trivia questions in the Tenement Chest and Chance cards. The questions are in reference to our immigration unit and the book, The Cat Who Escaped from Steerage, by Evelyn Wilde Mayerson, for ages 8âyears. The rules are explicitly outlined, so be sure to keep them out on your desk when you play the game. Unlike Monopoly, Immigrationopoly has a fifty-minute time limit. Before you begin, take a few minutes to thoroughly read through the instructions of the game with your classmates. Youâll need to make the equipment cards and game pieces. Youâll really need to use your imagination to create game pieces. A suggestion is to use places in the book by Wilde Mayerson. Questions have been provided.
Immigrationopoly Rules:
OBJECT: The object of the game is to become the wealthiest player through buying, renting, and selling of property.
EQUIPMENT: The equipment consists of a board, 2 dice, 8 tokens, 32 houses, and 12 Hotels. There are 16 Chance and 16 Tenement Chest cards, 28 Title Deed cards (one for each property), and play money.
PREPARATION: Place the board on a table and put the Chance and Tenement Chest cards face down on their allotted spaces on the board. Each player chooses one token to travel around the board. Each player is given $1,500 divided as follows: two $500s, two $100s, two $50s, six $20s, five $10s, five $5s, and five $1s. All remaining money and other equipment go to the Bank.
Before starting, the Banker shuffles and cuts the Title Deed cards and deals two to each player. Players immediately pay the Bank the price of the properties dealt to them.
BANKER: You will need to select a Banker who strictly works for the bank.
THE BANK: Besides the Bankâs money, the Bank holds the Title Deeds, and the houses and hotels prior to purchase by the players. The Bank pays salaries and bonuses for all questions answered correctly. It sells and auctions properties and hands out the proper Title Deed cards when purchased by a player, it also sells houses and hotels to the players and loans money when required on mortgages.
The Bank collects all taxes, fines, loans, and interest, and the price of all properties it sells and auctions. The Bank never goes broke. If the Bank runs out of money, the Banker may issue as much as needed by writing on any ordinary paper.
THE PLAY: Starting with the Banker, each player in turn throws the dice. The player with the highest total starts the play. Place your token on the corner marked âGO,â then throw the dice and move your token (in the direction of the pink arrow) the number of spaces indicated by the dice.
After you have completed your play, the turn passes to the left.
